A baby blanket is probably one of the first things most of us buy when preparing for a newborn. I know I did. 😊 You know you're going to need one, probably more than one and you don't really think much about it. It's a blanket. The baby needs to be warm. Simple.
But once you actually have a baby, you realize how often that blanket is there. You bring it to the hospital. You have it ready for the ride home. It comes with you in the stroller, stays close during naps...and somehow ends up in so many of the photos from those first months. You reach for it when the air conditioning is too cold, when you're going somewhere in the evening or simply when you want something soft around your baby while you're holding them.
That's why, when we were creating Baby Fil, the blanket was never something I considered an extra piece. For me, it belonged in the set from the beginning. A footie, a hat and a blanket just made sense together because those are things you actually use with a newborn. I also wanted our blankets to feel substantial enough to be useful, but still soft against newborn skin.
That's one of the reasons the fabric mattered so much to us. When something is going to be wrapped around your baby again and again, you notice how it feels. And then something happens that you don't really think about when you're buying it - your baby grows. 🤷♀️
Suddenly, the blanket that once seemed so big barely covers them anymore. You look at an old photo and realize how tiny they were when you first wrapped them in it. Eventually, you may stop using it altogether, but for some reason, it's one of those things that's hard to give away.🥹
I think that's what makes a baby's first blanket different from an ordinary blanket. It starts as something practical. Something you buy because you need it. And somewhere along the way, it becomes connected to a whole part of your baby's life - the hospital, the ride home, the stroller, the naps, the photos, the days when they could fit completely in your arms. Years later, you may open a drawer or a box and find that same blanket folded inside. By then, your baby may be running around the house, starting school, or much older. But you still remember exactly how small they looked wrapped inside it.
That's why I think a newborn blanket is one of the most meaningful gifts you can give to new parents. Yes, they'll use it. A lot. But there's also a good chance they'll keep it.
And one day, it may remind them of a time that went by much faster than they ever expected.
With love,
Mariana
