When we were deciding what should go into a Baby Fil newborn set, I didn't want to add more pieces just to make the box look fuller. I kept thinking about what I actually used with my daughter during those first weeks and what I would have loved to receive as a baby gift myself.
For me, it came down to three things: a footie, a hat and a blanket.
The footie was something I reached for all the time. It was easy, comfortable and I didn't have to think about putting an outfit together. Especially with a newborn, when you're changing diapers throughout the day and night, simple really does make life easier.
A hat was another basic I always had nearby, especially during those first days. It's such a small piece, but somehow it becomes part of that newborn look we all remember. I still look at photos of my daughter wearing her tiny hats and immediately think of those first days with her. But to be honest, my favorite was actually the simple hat she got at the hospital. There was nothing fancy about it, but that's the one I remember the most. 🤷♀️🥰
And then there's the blanket. I've already written about how a baby's first blanket can become so much more than just a blanket, but from a practical side, it's also something you use constantly. We used ours for the ride home, in the stroller, when we went somewhere, or simply when I wanted an extra layer around her.
When I put those three pieces together, they just made sense.
I also loved the idea that everything matched. You could dress your baby in the footie and hat, add the blanket, and you were ready. It worked for coming home from the hospital, the first visit to the pediatrician, meeting family or simply being at home.
That's also why I didn't feel that we needed to add five or six more things just to call it a gift set. I would rather have three pieces that parents will actually use than add things just to make the set look bigger.
The fabric was another important part of that decision. If these were going to be pieces a newborn would wear and use often, I wanted them to feel soft against the skin. That's why we chose Peruvian Pima cotton for our sets. It gave us the softness I was looking for while still allowing the pieces to have that classic look I wanted for Baby Fil.
And when someone gives one of our sets as a gift, I like knowing that everything inside has a purpose. You're not only giving something for the baby to wear once for a photo. The footie can be worn again and again, the hat is there when it's needed, and the blanket will probably stay around much longer than either of them.
That's really how our three-piece set started. There wasn't a complicated reason behind it. I simply went back to my own experience as a mom and chose the three pieces that made the most sense to me.
